ONLY THE LIVING CAN LOVE
A soldier:
After we’d landed
And started moving inland
There were these rumours,
These stories
Of French women firing on our troops
I never saw one myself, but I was told
There was this young woman
Who’d had a German sweetheart
He’d gotten killed in the fighting
So she got up on a church tower and shot one of our guys
With a Mauser
Then she was shot
I sometimes wonder about her.
A voice:

After the American soldier’s tale of the French sniper, the voice
in German sings about how war can bring back human values into
society: Social differences are levelled out, friendships become
essential and love can break all borders.
The dead Juliette replies angrily that war will always bring
destruction and death, and that only those who live can love.
